About This Quote

This quote is often misquoted as “When I was born, the doctor slit my throat to make sure I would live.” In fact, it is a perfectly normal thing for a doctor to do in order to make sure a baby survives. The quote comes from an anecdote about a child who was delivered by Cesarean section. As the doctor was preparing to perform the C-section, a nurse asked whether they should slit the throat of the child if he turned blue during the operation. The doctor said that they shouldn’t, but that if he did turn blue, they should cut his throat to see if he could still breathe.
